Parallel and Distributed Systems group

Welcome to the home page of the Parallel and Distributed Systems (PDS) group. PDS is one of the sections of the Department of Software and Computer Technology (SCT), which is part of the Faculty Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, and Computer Science (EEMCS) of Delft University of Technology.

The research of the PDS group concentrates on the modeling, the design, the implementation, and the analysis of parallel and distributed systems and algorithms. This research is fundamental in that we aim at the development and evaluation of generic methods and techniques, and application-driven in that the research is motivated by application areas. Most of our research is experimental: we try to build prototypes of systems, preferably used in the real world, to demonstrate the quality of the proposed solutions. The main research areas of the PDS group are P2P systems and online social networks, massively multiplayer online games, grids and clouds, and multicore architectures and parallel programming.

The teaching of the PDS group consists of BSc courses on computer systems, operating systems, and networks, and of MSc courses on High-Performance Computing, Parallel Algorithms, and Distributed Algorithms.

The PDS group has four faculty members, several postdocs, and a large number of Ph.D. students. We are a member of ASCI, the Dutch Advanced School for Computing and Imaging, which offers graduate courses to PhD students and opportunies for computer-science researchers in the Netherlands to meet.

The Section PDS has excellent computer and lab facilities for its experimental research. We have a 32-node cluster computer, which is part of the NWO-funded fourth-generation Distributed ASCI Supercomputer (DAS-4). Each node consists of two 2.4-GHz quad-core CPUs, and the total storage is 18TB. All the nodes are connected by a 10-Gb Infiniband network and a Gigabit Ethernet network. The entire cluster is connected by a wide-area network to similar systems at the other universities participating in ASCI.

  • Alexandru Iosup of the PDS group has won the title of "Docent van het Jaar Hoger Onderwijs 2015" (teacher of the year in higher education 2015) of the Interstedelijk StudentenOverleg (ISO). The prize that comes with this title was presented to him on 17 January 2015 by the Minister of Education, Culture and Science Jet Bussemaker. For more information, see the ISO webpage
